Every video game genre you need to know about | A guide for noobs

How well do you know your games? What type of games do you play or what type of video games are available out there? Several game genres are available. What is a video game genre you ask? It is a certain category of games that are related by similar characteristics or gameplay unlike movies or books video game genres are not defined by the story, settings, plotline, or the medium. They are grouped based on how the game is played let’s say you are a shooter in a sci-fi setting the game is an action-shooter game, now even if it's in an apocalyptic or fantasy setting, the genre remains the same as long as it is centered around the first-person shooter. We can take a look at the various video game genres in this blog.

These genres or categories are assigned to these games based on how players interact with the game, in terms of the number of genres, is growing number with an increase in the number of gaming platforms over the years from gaming consoles, computer games, and mobile games. There are main genres and several sub-genres that come under it which we will go through in this blog.

1. Action

Physical challenges that demand hand-eye coordination and motor skill to overcome are emphasized in action games. They are focused on the player, who is in charge of the majority of the action. Most of the earliest video games were classified as action games; it is still a broad category that encompasses any games that require physical exertion. The action genre is very broad in terms of sub-genres and it is also often combined with other genres like action-adventure or roleplay or survival games.

Several sub-genres come under action a few of the popular ones are:

• Platform games

The best example for a platform game is Super Mario, platform games are generally centered around navigating in the gaming environment usually by jumping and climbing, often with occasional enemies to fight or puzzles to solve on their path as obstacles.

• Shooter games

Here the player or shooter wields ranged lethal weaponry to combat the opposing player or enemy. These games can have non-violent objectives and are not necessarily completely violent. There can be two perspectives for these games FPS and TPS, first-person shooter and third-person shooting. As a first-person shooter, you will have the viewpoint of the player and not be able to see the character whereas in the third person the protagonist or the body of your character can be viewed from a third person's perspective. Some games do provide both options.

• Fighting games

Compared to shooter games fighter games deal with close-range combat. Mortal Kombat (originally developed by Midway Games), Super Smash Bros, and Street Fighter are all prime examples of fighting games. Here the character is involved in physically violent attacks against one or more enemies. Most of these are unarmed fights but some games do use weapons as well.

• Battle Royale games

This genre blends several elements like exploration, survival, scavenging with the objective of last man standing wins. It challenges a large number of players that start with minimal or no weapons and then scavenge for weapons as they try to survive and outlive others. Popular games in this genre are Fortnite, PUBG (Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds), COD: Warzone, and many more.

2. Adventure

Adventure games usually require the player to interact with the people and game environment and solve puzzles or quests. Since it doesn’t usually have action elements in it adventure games appeal to people who do not generally play video games or are not looking for combat games.

3. Simulation

Like the name suggests Simulation games are designed to simulate real-life or fictional events or situations. It varies from construction, farming creating your town or even empire. The Sims is the most popular and leading life simulation game.

4. Action Adventure

This genre is a combination of adventure and action. It is adventure games with action elements in them or vice versa they usually have a long-term obstacle that is to be overcome by using tools weapons or any other collected items during the game. "Action-adventure" has become a label that is sometimes attached to games that do not fit neatly into another well-known genre. Because they prevail on video game consoles and the absence of typical adventure games, action-adventure games are often called "adventure games" by modern gamers

5. Strategy

Strategy video games focus on gameplay requiring careful and skillful thinking and planning to achieve victory and the action scales from world domination to squad-based tactics. Strategy video games generally take one of four archetypal forms, depending on whether the game is turn-based or real-time and whether the game's focus is upon strategy or tactics.

6. Roleplaying

The gameplay of role-playing video games popularly features a fantasy setting, its origin is from traditional roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. In these games, each player plays a character that grows over time and evolves with experience.

By overcoming difficult challenges and/or defeating monsters/enemies, the player gains experience points that represent the character's progress. There are many sub-genres in RPG (role-playing games) like action RPG, MMORPG aka massively multiplayer online RPG like world of warcraft which we will go over another time.

7. Sports

Sports games simulate various sports like football, basketball, golf, tennis, and many more. It even includes Olympic sports as well. Again, this genre also has a few sub-genres like Racing; which popularly includes car racing games but there are other varieties as well.

8. Casual games

Casual games allow users to play games without the commitment of a full-fledged video game that takes longer to complete. These games are designed to be short and played when you plan on taking short breaks or relaxing. These games have autosave, pause, and minimize features as well that helps users to switch to other tasks. An example of a casual game is Frost Monk Studios’ latest game release Neon Rider which is a fun-filled timing-based game with thrilling maps and obstacles to overcome.

9. Sandbox games

In sandbox games, players don’t have a specific narrative goal or pathway to follow. This genre focuses on a more immersive experience. There could be a variety of tasks that you can do during the game. Minecraft and GTA (Grand Theft Auto) are the most popular examples, even The Sims, Sandbox games do have various elements from other genres in them.

10. Survival games

Survival games focus on, you guessed it like the name indicates Survival! Survive the game through various tasks whilst the story unfolds with resource procurement and management. Survival-horror is also a popular genre an example would be Resident Evil. 

There are many more genres and sub-genres that we haven’t discussed in this blog like we said earlier it is a growing list. Hence you can never complain games are boring with such a wide variety of options to choose from.
