About Unity 3D

The Unity game engine launched in 2005, aiming to "democratize" game development by making it accessible to more developers. The next year, Unity was named runner-up in the Best Use of Mac OS X Graphics category in Apple Inc.'s Apple Design Awards. Unity was initially released for Mac OS X, later adding support for Microsoft Windows and Web browsers. (Cite Wikipedia)

Unity gives users the ability to create games and experiences in both 2D and 3D, and the engine offers a primary scripting API in C#, for both the Unity editor in the form of plugins and games themselves, as well as drag and drop functionality.

Before C# being the primary programming language used for the engine, it previously supported Boo, which was removed with the release of Unity 5, and a version of JavaScript called UnityScript, which was deprecated in August 2017, after the release of Unity 2017.1, in favor of C#.

Why use Unity?

Unity is one of the easiest engines to work with it provides great assistance for coding and control your UI. In terms of programming languages that it uses, C# is used the most in Unity in addition to it JavaScript and a few .NET languages can be used with Unity.

If you are a beginner and are looking for an easy start into game development then Unity is a great platform for you, as it is a great engine for mid-size and small games, it helps you create 2D or 3D games and even a mix of both. It has many user-friendly features that make building your project easier along with tutorials. With the autocomplete and code suggestions it enables you to quickly learn as a beginner.

Unity is a blessing for indie developers who do not have big budgets as it is free to use although it will not have all the extra features its paid version has. You can use Unity for free as long as your income is not higher than 100K US dollars, if your turnover is higher than that then you are required to use the paid version of Unity. Unity is very fast in terms of processing and development speed and how easy it is to complete a project when compared to other engines which are its major advantage. Being a cross-platform engine Unity supports over 19 platforms.

Although Unity is easy to work with for beginners, to get more out of it you will have to put more work into it. Unlike other game engines, Unity does not provide you with a template, it does provide several free assets but if you want to create a game with better graphics you should be able to create the necessary assets and animations on your own. You will be able to create these on Unity free version itself but you will have to build it from scratch, Unity is like an empty canvas and you should know how to paint to create better and bigger games. All in all, Unity is an easy-to-use and good engine for beginners and users who wish to create small projects but like any other engine Unity also has a few drawbacks and we will cover those another time.
